Located on the enchanting island of Crete, Greece, lies the captivating city of Rethymno. This city, nestled between the azure waters of the Aegean Sea and the towering Psiloritis mountains, is a treasure trove of history, culture, and natural beauty. With a population of approximately 40,000 inhabitants, Rethymno is the third largest city on Crete. The closest airport to Rethymno is the Heraklion International Airport, which is about 80 kilometers away, making it easily accessible for international travelers.
There's no shortage of things to do and see in Rethymno. Start your journey at the Rethymnon beach, a long stretch of golden sand and crystal-clear waters that is perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports. From there, make your way to the Venetian Fortezza Castle, a majestic fortress that offers panoramic views of the city and the sea. Don't forget to visit the Rimondi Venetian Fountain, a beautiful monument that is a testament to the city's Venetian past.
For nature lovers, the Rethymnon Municipal Garden and the Mili Gorge are must-visit destinations. The garden is a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city, while the gorge offers a thrilling hiking experience. If you're up for a short trip outside the city, Lake Kournas is a stunning natural lake surrounded by lush greenery. Lastly, take a stroll through the Porta Guora, the old city gate, and immerse yourself in the city's rich history.
Rethymno is a city of endless charm, regardless of the season. However, if you're looking for warm, sunny weather, the best time to visit is during the summer months, from June to August. This is the perfect time for beach holidays in Rethymno, as the temperatures hover around a comfortable 28-30 degrees Celsius. On the other hand, if you prefer a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere, consider visiting in the spring or autumn. The weather is still pleasant, but the city is less crowded, allowing you to explore at your own pace.
The culinary scene in Rethymno is a gastronomic delight. The city is known for its Cretan cuisine, which is characterized by its simplicity, freshness, and use of local ingredients. Try the dakos, a traditional Cretan salad made with tomatoes, feta cheese, and crispy bread. For a hearty meal, opt for the moussaka, a baked dish made with eggplant, minced meat, and béchamel sauce. Don't forget to sample the local wines and raki, a traditional Cretan spirit.
When it comes to accommodation, Rethymno offers a range of options to suit every budget and preference. For a luxurious stay, consider the Aquila Rithymna Beach, a five-star resort located right on the beach. If you're looking for a family-friendly option, the Iberostar Creta Panorama & Mare is an excellent choice. This hotel offers a range of facilities, including a kids' club and multiple swimming pools. For those seeking a tranquil retreat, the Iberostar Selection Creta Marine is a four-star hotel located in a quieter part of the city, offering stunning sea views and top-notch amenities.
Whether you're a history buff, a foodie, a nature lover, or a beach bum, Rethymno has something for everyone.
