Located in the western part of France, Nantes is a vibrant city that sits on the banks of the Loire River. It is the sixth-largest city in France, with a population of over 300,000 inhabitants. The city is served by Nantes Atlantique Airport, which is conveniently located just 8 kilometers from the city center. Nantes is a city that beautifully blends the old with the new, offering a rich history and a thriving contemporary culture.
There is no shortage of things to do and see in Nantes. One of the city's most iconic attractions is the Machines of the Isle of Nantes, a unique artistic project that brings to life the imaginary world of the famous writer Jules Verne. Here, you can marvel at the giant mechanical elephant or take a ride on the fantastical carousel.
History buffs will appreciate a visit to the Chateau of the Dukes of Brittany. This historic castle, which now houses the Nantes History Museum, offers a fascinating insight into the city's past. The castle's ramparts provide stunning views over the city, and the beautifully illuminated castle is a sight to behold at night.
For nature lovers, the Jardin des Plantes is a must-visit. This botanical garden is home to over 10,000 species of plants, and its beautifully manicured gardens are perfect for a leisurely stroll. The Japanese Garden is another serene spot that offers a tranquil escape from the city's hustle and bustle.
Shopaholics will love the Passage Pommeraye, a stunning 19th-century shopping arcade that is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe. For sports enthusiasts, catching a game at the Stade de la Beaujoire is a must. This stadium is home to the FC Nantes, one of the most successful football clubs in France.
Finally, don't miss out on visiting Le Lieu Unique. This former biscuit factory has been transformed into a cultural center and is a hub for contemporary art, music, and theater.
Nantes is a city that can be enjoyed all year round. However, the best times to visit are during the spring (April to June) and fall (September to November). During these seasons, the weather is mild and the city's parks and gardens are in full bloom. The summer months (July and August) can also be a great time to visit, as the city hosts a number of festivals and events, including the Voyage à Nantes, a city-wide art and culture festival.
Nantes is a food lover's paradise. The city is known for its fresh seafood, and a visit to Nantes would not be complete without trying the local oysters or mussels. Other local specialties include the "galette," a savory buckwheat crepe, and the "fouace nantaise," a sweet brioche-like bread. For dessert, don't miss out on the "berlingots nantais," colorful hard candies that are a local favorite.
